I asked my patients what led to the decision to have an Endometrial Ablation, how the procedure went, if there was a good understanding of what was being done, and what the results were. Here are candid responses from my patients:
Jeanine, age 41 from Concord:
“I had long heavy periods that lasted 8-10 days. Bleeding through tampons and pads was common for me. I had been having these symptoms for approx. 8-10 years. No treatments were ever tried preceding surgery. It was a very good experience. I didn’t have a lot of pain or discomfort, and what was there was easily controlled with oral medication. In every way it has completely changed my life. I can go on vacation without ever worrying. I can go to work without worrying, sex life is better, no more bloating, backache, and messiness, nothing during my period!!! This was the best thing I ever did. The only regret I have is not doing it sooner. Thank you Dr. Wells!!”
Collette, age 40 from Walnut Creek:
“My menstrual cycle was out of control! My periods were lasting 10+ days and those 10+ days consisted of extremely HEAVY flow with a lot of clotting. I was at a point that during my cycle, I couldn’t be out of sight from a bathroom for more than an hour. I would soak through a super plus and maxi pad! This procedure was a lifesaver! This procedure was extremely simple! Went in the morning, home by 11am and a few Motrin and I was good to go! After the procedure, there was minimal cramping-like period cramping. The endometrial ablation was the BEST. My years of dealing with out of control periods are over! I highly recommend this procedure to all suffering women! My periods are max 4 days and panty liners for just in case! Thank you Dr. Wells! My life doesn’t revolve around my period! I am FREE!! Dr. Wells, Thank you thank you thank you! You’ve allowed –made it possible with the ablation for my active life to be fun again! I had the best summer in a long time out on the boat…wakeboarding. No more worries :)”
Alice, age 42 from Pleasant Hill:
“Had worsening, over the last 5-7 years, of severe/debilitating menstrual cramping, heavy, irregular, flooding-like flow at times. Tried birth control pills, herbal remedies, and high dose prescription pain pills. Although an ultrasound found no fibroids or endometriosis, Dr. Wells suspected I might have adenomyosis. Because of insurance reasons, my procedure was at Aspen [surgery center in Walnut Creek]. I had no pain at all after the ablation, and didn’t even take a pain pill once after the procedure. Yes, the procedure was well explained to me and I felt well prepared. Now, I experience complete freedom from the painful, heavy periods and the associated anxiety and dread of their onset. I don’t know how, but I feel most of my PMS is gone too. I was fully expecting this procedure NOT to work, since I seem to have bad luck, but 4 1/2 months after I have not had any problems other than a little yeast and odor problem that seem to be clearing up. Thanks to Dr. Wells and all your staff. I always feel well cared for.”
Jane, age 46 from Danville:
“My condition prior to the procedure: My periods lasted from 10-12 days each month with heavy bleeding. This condition has been occurring since my teen years. I had tried acupuncture and a chiropractor in hopes of “the magic bullet” solution, but without success. My experience throughout the procedure was EXCELLENT. I was well informed of what to expect before, during and after the procedure. I was a little hesitant initially not knowing the pain level, however, was pleasantly surprised how little pain I experienced -Good job Dr. Wells! The quality of my life has improved greatly. I no longer need to be checking inventory on how may sanitary products I have in my cabinet. I don’t need to schedule my work or leisure activities based on “what time of the month it is.” I have gained back all 4 weeks in a month -Yipee! I would highly recommend this procedure to women in my same situation and the one and only doctor I would recommend would be Dr. Stephen Wells 🙂 THANK YOU!! [My husband] thanks you too…”
Melissa, age 46 from Concord:
“I was experiencing extra-long menstrual periods with very heavy bleeding. I was going through a 40-count Super box of tampons in 3 days. I had to change almost every hour. These symptoms were occurring for about 4-6 months. It got to the point where I started to miss work due to severe cramping and bleeding. I had a pretty good understanding [of the ablation procedure]. I just though “whatever they have to do to stop this will work for me.” It was a weird feeling, but I knew what was happening. I did experience some pain, but it just felt like cramps. Once it was completed I felt better, knowing that my periods won’t last a month anymore. No more cramps and long periods –no more missing work! Dr. Wells and his staff did a great job. I am very thankful I don’t have to deal with the heavy bleeding and cramps anymore!!!”
Elizabeth, age 47 from Walnut Creek:
“For 10 years I had very heavy bleeding. At “times,” I was unable to leave the house. Luckily I am a stay at home mom and could avoid going out in public, but that was no way to live! Dr. Wells talked me through each step of the way and told me what to expect. It was a little uncomfortable but not painful. I had no pain at all after the procedure during recovery at home. After the procedure I finally had “normal” periods. Over time, my periods became lighter and lighter. Today, a year and a half later, I have no period at all! Do I need to explain how this improved my quality of life? Isn’t it obvious?”
Paulette, age 44 from Lafayette:
“HEAVY, CLOTTY bleeding, brutal cramps, lower back pain, soaking through tampon after tampon for days… it was happening for probably 5+ years, maybe longer. The procedure was a piece of cake. Easy-peasy. The biopsy [done as part of the pre-procedure evaluation] sucked, but everything else was a breeze. No pain at all –I was up and about the next day. Thought it would be more painful. I was well prepared and knew exactly what would happen every step of the way. Since the ablation, no more bleeding! I’m not completely wiped out every month because of blood loss. No cramping, a touch of blood-tinged discharge only. No more buying tampons!! Highly recommend to anyone who has increased bleeding or with clotty periods. Should have done it years ago, but it takes what it takes and I was clearly ready!”
Kristin, age 42 from Danville:
“Before I had the endometrial ablation, I had been dealing with excessive bleeding every 21 days. My bleeding was waking me up several times a night and I would have to wear a tampon and a pad that I changed every hour. I tried birth control pills but was having break-through bleeding. After three years of silently suffering through this, I confided in Dr Wells who then recommended the procedure. I was very nervous before and during the procedure. Every step of the procedure was explained well and turned out better than I thought. The prep was longer than the actual procedure, which was done in 90 seconds. The pain was minimal during the procedure. Sever hours after the ablation, the pain was like having strong cramps or contractions. This only lasted one day and was easily controlled. My bleeding and discharge lasted 6 weeks –a little longer than I thought. This was more bothersome than painful. The endometrial ablation has changed my life. I have had excellent results and have not had a period in over 1 year. I didn’t realize how much I was dealing with until I didn’t have to worry about having sleepless nights [as a result of my period]. My energy level is more consistent and I don’t have any low iron troubles anymore. My quality of life has improved a great deal. I used to worry about where I would be during my period to make sure I was close to a bathroom. Now I have the freedom to enjoy myself and not worry. This procedure is worth every minimal bit of discomfort you may experience because the results are life changing.”
Ingrid, age 44 from Danville:
“[My symptoms included] heavy bleeding & clotting; I had these symptoms for about 4-5 years. I had not done anything prior to this procedure. The procedure was much easier than I thought. I responded well to the drug therapy [medication regimen for the endometrial ablation]. I felt I was given enough info to feel comfortable with the procedure. I no longer have a period which has been a huge burden lifted off my shoulders!! Would highly recommend it!!”
Susan, age 46 from Clayton:
“I had extremely heavy periods-soak through a tampon & maxi pad in less than an hour. Length of periods increased from 5-7 days to 10 days. Bleeding in between periods. I had been reporting similar symptoms for approx 3 years but they were less severe. They steadily got worse. No other treatments tried. Birth Control pills were not an option because of my age and previous history taking them. I just tried to deal with the symptoms as best I could until they impacted my life too seriously. I did not feel any pain, nor did I feel groggy after the procedure. It was much easier than I thought it would be. Dr. Wells and his staff explained the procedure in advance. I was given written information and instructions. I knew exactly what to expect and felt well prepared. I basically no longer have a period-one party-liner takes care of everything. It was a little disconcerting at first to have no period, but I quickly got used to it. I don’t have to worry about leakage problems during my 75-minute commute or while swimming or exercising. I also don’t have the expense of large quantities of numerous products.
As always, Dr. Wells is the best- always up on the latest techniques and willing to take as much time as necessary with every patient. Couldn’t ask for a better doc! The ablation was truly one of the best things I’ve done for myself. My only regret is that it took my nurse practitioner a while to diagnose me with my problem [menorrhagia].”
Monica, age 41 from Danville:
“I have always had heavy periods. Once I reached 38 years old and had 3 children, my periods got worse. I would have clotting during the night. Sometimes during the day it would be so bad I would soak through my pants. I can remember the day I called Dr. Wells to “book me.” I was in Maui, swimming in the pool with my daughter. Even though I had a tampon in, I felt the clot. Sure enough, I was saturated when I got out of the pool. I called right from there. I did not find the procedure painful. I did not however, feel prepared for the weeks and days after. If took me a lot longer to heal than I thought. I did not take enough time off work (fitness teacher). When I went back, I felt I took 10 steps backwards. I was scared, honestly. It took me at least 6 weeks to recover. I feel a weight has been lifted. Now if you could take the PMS away too?? I wish I did it 3 years earlier. I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking of doing it. Take the time to heal as if you just had a hysterectomy. Take it easy.”
Tia, age 46 from Walnut Creek:
“I was having a menstrual cycles that were lasting up to 12 or 13 days. Although it was not heavy, it continued so long; I felt that it was very much a nuisance. When I was taking oral contraceptives it was short, but after taking them for 25 years I really wanted NOT to be ingesting them. I knew my husband and I were not planning on having additional children, so when I learned about the endometrial ablation procedure, I felt it would be a great solution to my problem and it was! Dr. Wells and his staff explained the procedure in depth to me and I felt totally prepared for it. The pain was not too bad (during the procedure I felt absolutely no pain whatsoever). Just much later in the day and part of the next day I had some cramping similar to a menstrual cycle. The main medicine prescribed worked well, so I felt the recovery was easy. The first few months after the procedure I still had some lingering flow, but as Dr. Wells and his staff explained, it became less and less to the point that for some months now I have a little bloating like a normal period but no flow at all. A great relief and I’ve been telling many of my friends who are suffering from heavy or lingering flow to consider an endometrial ablation. Also, it was so simple and easy to not have to go to the hospital for the simple procedure–just an office visit to Dr. Wells!”
Michelle, age 42 from Danville:
“Heavy, heavy bleeding and clotting. Had very heavy long-lasting periods after my 3rd child.
My experience was comfortable and quick. I was very well informed of the procedure. They were great with monitoring my pain level and adjusting medication accordingly to keep me pain free. Just felt like one BIG contraction and then it was over. The result: No period! I can actually go somewhere without having to worry that I am bleeding everywhere. [I have] much more freedom and I never get cramps or bloating. I should have done the procedure 5 years ago when Dr. Wells first mentioned it to me. I was scared of the pain…but it really was not a big deal!
Please feel free to have anyone contact me for any other questions regarding the procedure!!”
Maureen, age 43 from Alamo:
“My Period were lasting 12 days, going on for a few years; nothing was tried before the procedure.
It was more painful than I thought during the procedure, but I was well prepared and understood procedure well. I LOVE not having a period 🙂 The painful procedure was worth it!!!”
